Dirty Dancing 2: Everything We Know About the Long-Awaited Sequel to the 1987 Classic

Nearly four decades after Dirty Dancing first danced its way into pop culture history, the beloved coming-of-age romance is officially returning to the big screen.

On January 27, Lionsgate confirmed that a sequel to the 1987 classic is moving forward — with Jennifer Grey reprising her iconic role as Frances “Baby” Houseman. Production is expected to begin in 2026, marking one of the most anticipated legacy sequels in recent years.

A Return to Kellerman’s — For Old Fans and New Audiences

“We are moving full steam ahead so that both existing fans and new audiences can discover the magic, the music, and the emotion that is Dirty Dancing in a new theatrical film meant for the big screen,” said Adam Fogelson, Chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, in an official statement.

Since its release in 1987, Dirty Dancing has remained a cultural touchstone, celebrated for its music, romance, and emotional honesty. In a 2020 interview, Grey reflected on the film’s enduring appeal, calling it “genuine and simple.”

“It was about innocence,” she said. “About the way innocence is lost, and how people grow into a different version of themselves.”

What Will Dirty Dancing 2 Be About?

Plot details for the sequel remain tightly under wraps. However, the screenplay will be written by Kim Rosenstock, co-creator of Dying for Sex, signaling a character-driven and emotionally grounded approach.

The film is being produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, the acclaimed team behind The Hunger Games and Crazy Rich Asians. Jacobson described the original Dirty Dancing as a rare film that remains “as emotional, exhilarating, and rebellious today as it was when it was first released.”

When the sequel was initially announced in 2020, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer noted that the project was envisioned as a romantic, nostalgic continuation — precisely the kind of film longtime fans have been waiting for.

    The Cast: Baby’s Story Continues

While a full cast has yet to be announced, Jennifer Grey’s return is confirmed, bringing Baby back to the screen decades after audiences last saw her at Kellerman’s.

“The role of Baby has held a very deep and meaningful place in my heart,” Grey said in a statement. “I’ve long wondered where Baby might be years later and what her life would look like.”

Grey also addressed the emotional weight of revisiting the franchise without her late co-star Patrick Swayze, who passed away in 2009 from pancreatic cancer.

“There is no replacing anyone who’s passed,” she told PEOPLE. “You never try to repeat something that was magic. You just go for something different.”

    Who Is Directing?

As of now, no director has been officially announced. Jonathan Levine, who was originally attached to direct when the project was revealed in 2020, will now serve as an executive producer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

    Filming Timeline and Locations

Production on Dirty Dancing 2 is scheduled to begin later in 2026. Filming locations have not yet been disclosed. The original film was shot primarily at Mountain Lake Lodge in Virginia and Lake Lure in North Carolina, locations that have since become pilgrimage sites for fans of the film.

    Release Date

Lionsgate has not yet announced an official release date for the sequel.
